Gallimaufry : Any absurd medley; a hotchpotch

I recently visited the European Commission website to review EU regulations and find some information relating to business contracts and competition. I landed on the Small Business Act page which was exactly one paragraph of non-information. I then clicked on the Link for Smart Regulation which directed me to another page with the message, "THIS PAGE DOES NOT EXIST". It tickled my funny bone a bit, I would venture to say that perhaps not only does the page not exist but smart regulation does not exist at all, especially when it comes to small businesses that are shackled by the large companies that bind them to agreements that lead to unfair pricing and terms that virtually insure the failure of the "little guys".

Tokes, our dog adopted as a puppy in Mexico"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace." – Milan Kundera

I love dogs, but since I live in an apartment that doesn't allow pets, I can't have a dog. Everyone should be able to have a dog. Dogs are loving, loyal, fun. Having a dog is a responsibility, you need to feed him, walk him, love him. Having a dog is good for your health, petting a dog or cat reduces blood pressure, having to walk your dog forces you to exercise, and having pets makes people happier and can actually help people live longer.

I think Facebook has some fantastic things about it but I hate Facebook because it makes me feel like I am in Junior High or High School again.

  • I hate Facebook because it brings out all my insecurities.
  • I hate Facebook because it is like running for Prom Queen when you are fat and pimply.

Life Without Internet and BackupsI have just gone a week without having Internet access, access to my computer, and access to all my data. I was lost. Without data backups and Internet access it is virtually impossible to do anything. Backing up data should always be a priority but I didn't back up files regularly. I tried to install a new service pack and couldn't boot my computer. I tried to run system recovery, but my computer could find no restore point. I loaded Ubuntu and tried to see where my files were. I couldn't access my C drive but the D partition was still there (unfortunately it was all old stuff which I had backed up before). I tried to run system recovery from f4 and my computer froze completely, it could not see the c drive at all.

living abroad, an expat living in germanyLiving abroad, being an expat, it not always easy.  Living in a foreign country can be difficult, there are language barriers, differences in customs, different laws, different lifestyles.  I have lived abroad the better part of the last 15 years and still struggle daily with the trials and tribulations of being an expat.

I live in Germany.  Friends ask me why.  A good question.  I am often not sure.  I am terrible at German, I don’t even pretend to understand Germans, but I like it here.  If you can get by all the red tape (which not even the Germans can do), it probably is a great place to live.

The first time I said anything remotely German, I told one of my employees (who spoke English) that I wanted the Frankfurter Allgemagne delivered to the office.

“What?”

“The Frankfurter All ge main”

“What is that?”

“What newspaper?”

“The All ge main”

“There is no such paper.”

Finally in frustration I pulled out a piece of paper and scribbled the name.

“Oh you mean the All ge man ye.”

I should have realized then it wasn’t going to be easy for me to integrate myself into German culture.  When I try to speak with Germans in German their eyes glaze over and they look furtively around the room for the quickest escape.
